Pune: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology is set to transform sugarcane production in Maharashtra. To ensure rapid implementation of this system, the Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) and Baramati Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) will intensify their efforts under the leadership of Sharad Pawar.

As part of this initiative, Baramati KVK has successfully demonstrated an AI-based farming model that promises higher yields at lower costs. The project was reviewed by senior leader Sharad Pawar, Jayant Patil, Supriya Sule, Rajendra Pawar, and VSI researchers.

Speaking at the event, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) President Jayant Patil expressed satisfaction over the AI-driven sugarcane farming experiment and highlighted its potential to boost productivity and efficiency in the sector.

Maharashtra’s Sugarcane Productivity Lags Behind

Although India has the world’s largest sugarcane cultivation area, its per-hectare yield is lower than Brazil’s. Within India, Maharashtra’s sugarcane productivity is behind Tamil Nadu’s due to various challenges such as:

  • Low soil fertility

  • Poor farm management practices

  • Lack of quality seeds

  • Imbalanced use of fertilizers and water

  • Climate change effects

  • Pest and disease outbreaks

  • Weight loss due to improper harvesting timing

To address these issues, Baramati KVK has been pioneering the integration of AI into sugarcane farming.
