Pune: A technical fault in the jackwell of the Bhama Askhed Project has caused a major disruption in water supply across Pune’s eastern areas, including Wadgaon Sheri, Dhanori, Viman Nagar, and Vishrantwadi. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Water Supply Department has stated that restoration work is in progress, and normal supply is expected to resume by Friday (March 7) evening.
The PMC supplies water from the Bhama Askhed Dam to multiple localities in the eastern part of Pune. The areas affected by the disruption include: Wadgaon Sheri, Sanjay Park, Viman Nagar, MHADA Colony, SRA, Kulkarni Garage, Yamunanagar, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, parts of Vishrantwadi, Dhanori, Lohegaon, Chandan Nagar, Kharadi, and Nagar Road.
Residents of Wadgaon Sheri had already been facing issues with low water pressure for the past few days. However, the situation worsened on Wednesday afternoon when a cable inside the Bhama Askhed jackwell burned out, leading to a complete failure of the pumping system. This rendered the jackwell non-functional, resulting in a complete halt in water supply throughout the affected areas.
Following the failure, the PMC’s Water Supply Department immediately began repair work. Initially, officials assured that water supply would be restored by Thursday afternoon. However, despite efforts, water remained unavailable throughout Thursday.
While the cable repairs were completed, the jackwell itself remained non-operational, preventing water distribution. Indrabhan Randive, Superintendent of the Water Supply Department, has now stated that water supply should normalize by Friday evening.
The sudden disruption in supply has caused major inconvenience for residents, particularly in areas like Vadgaon Sheri and Viman Nagar, where many rely on municipal water for daily needs. Some residents had to depend on private water tankers, while others faced severe difficulties due to the unexpected water cut.
