Wedding Season Boosts Demand for Flowers in Pune, Vegetable Prices Drop as Supply Surges

The fruit market reported a drop in the prices of watermelon and muskmelon, while the prices of lemons, pineapples, oranges, sweet limes, pomegranates, and sapota remained stable.

Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Gultekdi witnessed the arrival of approximately 100 trucks of vegetables on Sunday from various regions across Maharashtra and neighboring states. Due to increased supply and reduced demand, the prices of key vegetables such as onions, cauliflower, cabbage, capsicum, green peas, and Totapuri mangoes dropped by 10-15%. Traders indicated that the prices of other vegetables remained stable due to balanced demand.

Vegetable arrivals from out-of-state sources included approximately 14-15 tempos of green chilies from Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh; 5-6 tempos of cabbage from Karnataka and Gujarat; 4-5 tempos of cluster beans from Karnataka and Gujarat; 5-6 tempos of drumsticks from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu; 10 trucks of carrots and 9-10 trucks of green peas from Rajasthan; and 5-6 tempos of Totapuri mangoes from Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, 17-18 tempos of garlic were received from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Local arrivals included 500-600 sacks of ginger from Satara, 7-8 tempos each of okra and cabbage, 5-6 tempos of cluster beans, 4-5 tempos of green chilies, 10,000 crates of tomatoes, 10-12 tempos of cauliflower, 7-8 tempos of cucumbers, 10-12 tempos of capsicum, 14-15 tempos of red pumpkin, 150-160 trucks of onions, and 40 tempos of potatoes from Indore, Agra, and surrounding regions.

Vegetable Prices (Per 10 kg):

  • Onion: ₹180-240

  • Potato: ₹120-190

  • Garlic: ₹200-700

  • Ginger (Satara): ₹250-300

  • Okra: ₹300-500

  • Cluster Beans: ₹600-800

  • Tomato: ₹80-120

  • Cauliflower: ₹60-80

  • Cabbage: ₹60-80

  • Green Peas (Out-of-state): ₹220-300

  • Totapuri Mango: ₹400-700

Increase in Coriander and Spinach Prices

Market Yard also saw price fluctuations in leafy greens, with coriander and spinach prices rising while fenugreek, dill, spring onions, amaranth, and sorrel prices declined. Meanwhile, chard, safflower leaves, mint, roselle, and radish prices remained stable. The market received approximately 90,000 bundles of coriander and 60,000 bundles of fenugreek.

Leafy Greens Prices (Per 100 Bundles):

  • Coriander: ₹800-1200

  • Fenugreek: ₹500-800

  • Dill: ₹500-700

  • Spinach: ₹500-1000

Decline in Watermelon and Muskmelon Prices

  • Sweet Lime: 30-35 tons

  • Oranges: 70-80 tons

  • Pomegranates: 15-20 tons

  • Papaya: 8-10 tempos

  • Watermelon: 50-60 tempos

  • Muskmelon: 40-50 tempos

Fruit Prices:

  • Lemons (Per Sack): ₹300-1100

  • Oranges (10 kg): ₹200-900

  • Pomegranates (Per kg): ₹80-250

  • Watermelon: ₹7-10 per kg

  • Muskmelon: ₹12-20 per kg

  • Papaya: ₹12-25 per kg

High Demand for Flowers Amid Wedding Season

With the ongoing wedding season, flower demand has surged. However, traders anticipate a potential decline in supply due to rising temperatures in the coming days.

Flower Prices (Per kg):

  • Marigold: ₹30-60

  • Gladiolus: ₹160-230

  • Dutch Roses (20 pieces): ₹120-220

  • Gerbera: ₹30-50

  • Carnation: ₹250-300

  • Orchid: ₹350-500
