Pune, 30 July 2025: In a first for Pune, an AI-based traffic surveillance system installed on the busy Fergusson College (FC) Road has detected more than 3,000 traffic violations over a two-month period. The system, launched on May 28 as part of a 90-day pilot project, aims to improve road discipline and ease congestion in one of the city’s busiest academic and commercial areas.

According to Pune city traffic police, the AI cameras recorded a total of 3,178 violations as of July 28. These include 1,284 cases of double parking and 1,279 instances of vehicles parked in no-parking zones. Additionally, the system flagged 617 cases of wrong-side driving, 32 triple-seat riders, and eight motorists using mobile phones while driving.

A traffic police official said that in just 62 days, the AI cameras on FC Road automatically captured thousands of violations. After the trial ends, authorities will review the results and decide the next course of action.

This AI-powered system uses smart cameras that monitor real-time CCTV footage to detect violations such as illegal parking, wrong-side driving, and unauthorised halts. It also generates alerts and issues e-challans automatically, without the need for on-ground enforcement.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with Sensei AI and is led by Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Officials noted that this is Pune’s first trial of a fully automated traffic monitoring system and forms part of a larger smart traffic management plan being gradually rolled out across the city.
