Pune, 1st June 2025: Following a shocking incident of sexual assault on a young woman at Bopdev Ghat last year, Pune Police have taken concrete steps to enhance safety in the area. The entire stretch is now being upgraded with advanced surveillance systems, including high-resolution CCTV cameras, IP-based speakers, emergency call boxes, and soon-to-be-installed floodlights for better night-time visibility.
As a precautionary measure, the CCTV system is already functional, and efforts are ongoing to strengthen the police presence in the area. Instructions were earlier given by Deputy Chairperson Dr. Neelam Gorhe to increase police patrols in isolated locations, upgrade police outposts, ensure proper street lighting, and install loudspeakers and surveillance systems. The state government has since allocated necessary funds for the project.
A total of 25 high-resolution IP-based CCTV cameras have been set up across Bopdev Ghat. These are directly connected to a central control room, enabling live monitoring. IP speakers are also installed, allowing real-time communication and instructions from the control center.
To support the system, an 8.5-kilometre-long power and internet fiber line has been laid. Floodlights will soon be installed to tackle poor night visibility.
Rohan Suravase, President of the Swabhimani Brigade Organization, said, “Several issues regarding the Bopdev Ghat road had been raised earlier. It's a relief that action is finally being taken, though it would have been more effective if done before the unfortunate incident. Still, better late than never. Regular maintenance and inspection of these facilities are necessary to ensure they function properly.”
Senior Police Inspector Vinay Patankar from Kondhwa Police Station stated, “The hi-tech security upgrade at Bopdev Ghat is well underway, thanks to timely funding from the state government. Once all systems are linked to our police station’s control, we will have better oversight of the area, which will help in preventing such tragic incidents in the future.”
