Pune, 11 July 2025: In yet another case of poor hygiene in Pune’s food establishments, a woman discovered a cockroach in her soup while dining at a popular restaurant in the Camp area. The incident occurred on June 16 around 9 PM at Bhiwandi Darbar Hotel, a well-frequented place in the locality. The woman, 31, had visited the hotel along with her family for dinner and had ordered soup as a starter. To their shock, a cockroach was found in the soup served to them.
The woman immediately brought the matter to the attention of the hotel staff. However, the restaurant management allegedly ignored the complaint and refused to take responsibility. The situation escalated, and the woman called the police to the spot. The soup was seized by the police and later handed over to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for analysis.
After conducting tests, the FDA confirmed the presence of harmful contaminants in the soup, certifying that it was unfit for human consumption. Based on the FDA report, the Lashkar Police registered a criminal case against the hotel owner and the manager for endangering public health and serving hazardous food to customers.
The FIR mentions that the hotel had failed to maintain even basic hygiene standards and served food that posed a serious threat to the life and health of its patrons. This comes shortly after another incident in Pune where a customer reportedly found a piece of glass in a bun maska, raising broader concerns about food safety and accountability across the city's eateries.
Authorities have assured that further action will be taken against the establishment under applicable food safety and criminal provisions. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed discussions about the enforcement of sanitation and food safety norms in Pune's restaurants.
