Cosmos bank's server hacked; Rs 94 cr siphoned off

Pune: Cyber attack hackers managed to withdraw Rs 94 crore through cloned bank accounts of customers of Pune based Cosmos Bank between August 11 to August 13.

Following the incident, Cosmos bank has shut down its ATM, internet banking services and has appealed customer to reach its bank branches for their banking needs. Speaking about the attack Chairman Milind Kale of Cosmos bank said that hackers gained access of Cosmos bank servers through proxy switch and withdrew money from different ATM machines in 28 countries across the world.

"In all 12000 transaction were carried out by the hackers to withdraw money from these ATM machines." added kale. 

The bank has lodged a case at Chatushringi police station under section 43, 65 , 66(C) and 66 (D) of the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of Indian Penal Code. Kale said that the cards of the cooperative bank customers that were cloned were of Visa and Rupay and the bank suspect that the hackers were from Canada.

"None of the customers' accounts were touched and it is the bank which has incurred the loss of this money. In all Rs 78 crore was withdrawn through cloned VISA account, Rs 2.5 crore through 2800 debit transactions in India and Rs 13 crore through swift account in a Hongkong based bank." Kale said.
