Pune Division Records Surplus Rainfall in June; Farmers Wait for Soil to Dry Before Sowing

Despite above-average rains across the region, excess moisture delays farm activities in parts of Pune, Solapur, and surrounding districts

Pune, 23 June 2025: Pune Division has witnessed a wetter-than-usual start to the monsoon season, recording an average of 108.7% of normal rainfall for June, with Pune district itself receiving 146.8% of its typical June showers so far. Kolhapur has also fared well at 92.3%, while Solapur lags behind with 76%, the lowest in the division.

Compared to this time last year, the region is seeing 118.7% of last year’s rainfall levels, thanks in part to an intense downpour in May which pushed up the seasonal average.

However, after a week of heavy rains, precipitation eased across Pune and nearby areas on Sunday. The ghat regions, which had received continuous heavy showers, reported lower figures, Tamhini recorded 91mm and Lonavla 18mm in the past 24 hours. City pockets like Shivajinagar, Pashan, Lohegaon, Chinchwad, NDA, and Koregaon Park only saw light showers, all under 7mm.

Despite this brief break, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pune’s ghat sections on Monday, predicting a fresh increase in rain intensity under generally cloudy skies.

Meanwhile, the heavy showers have boosted water storage in Pune’s four major dams, Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar, and Khadakwasla, to a combined 10.17 TMC, or 34.87% of total capacity.

Interestingly, while farmers usually face delays due to late or scanty monsoon rain, this year they are grappling with the opposite, excess moisture. In many areas, fields are too wet for immediate sowing, forcing farmers to wait for soil aeration before beginning planting work. For some, this pause is necessary to prevent seed damage and ensure healthy crop growth when conditions stabilize.
