Pune: As part of the road safety initiative, Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Road Department has painted the first-ever three dimension (3D) zebra crossing on BMCC Road in Deccan Gymkhana area in the city.
With the initiative undertaken by the Pune city traffic police, the 3D zebra crossing is an optical design, which will grab the attention of drivers to slow their vehicles down. For the past few years, such crossings have been used in many European countries. Besides that, the Delhi civic body also adopted this concept in 2016.
PMC Road Department’s Additional City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar said, “The civic body has decided to paint a three-dimension (3D) zebra crossing on BMCC Road on an experimental basis. The purpose is to check the reaction of citizens on a 3D zebra crossing. People’s reaction and the success of this concept will then be followed in other parts of the city as well,” said Pawaskar.
“BMCC Road is one of the busiest roads in the city. Many college students and youths ride their bikes at high speeds. This concept of 3D zebra crossing will help the youths to be careful and follow the speed limit. We have also been appealing to the people to express their response about the same on PMC Care website, Facebook page, Twitter handle and other social platforms. Both positive, as well as negative reactions and suggestions from the citizens, will be considered for the initiative,” added Pawaskar.
An earlier design of the 3D zebra crossing was painted on a road near the office of DCP (Traffic).
