Pune, 6th October 2025: A five-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a stray dog on September 30th. She was admitted to Poona Hospital with her finger completely severed and multiple soft tissue injuries.
The child was treated by Dr. Abhishek Ghosh, a distinguished expert in Microvascular and Reconstructive Surgery, undergoing an urgent microsurgical operation that lasted four hours. During the procedure, the bones were stabilized, and small blood vessels and nerves were meticulously reconnected using a microscope.
Despite the injury's severe damage, the surgery effectively reinstated blood flow and functionality to the finger.
Due to the risk of rabies, the child received anti-rabies prophylaxis, which included both antibodies and a vaccine, as part of her treatment.
Due to the swift surgical intervention and specialized skills, the reattached finger has been preserved, and the child is currently recuperating well. She is anticipated to be released shortly in a stable state.
Dr. Ghosh emphasized the necessity of immediate medical attention and specialized microvascular skills for effectively performing complex replantation surgeries, including those involving animal bites.
