Pune, 14 June 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh heavy rain alert for Pune today, following intense showers that battered the city on Thursday night and Friday evening, causing widespread disruption.
Torrential rainfall turned several key roads into waterlogged stretches, leading to massive traffic jams and leaving commuters stranded for hours. Travel times on major routes reportedly tripled as vehicles crawled through flooded streets. Visuals from Pimpri-Chinchwad showed long queues of slow-moving vehicles struggling through inundated roads.
In Charholi, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Fire Department had to rescue vehicles submerged in floodwaters after Thursday night’s downpour. Officials are closely monitoring the situation as more heavy rain is forecast in the coming days.
Shivajinagar Logs Season’s Highest Rainfall
On Friday evening, Shivajinagar recorded the highest rainfall of this monsoon season so far, receiving 55 mm in less than three hours as powerful thundershowers, accompanied by lightning, swept across Pune.
Several other parts of the city also reported significant rainfall: Chinchwad recorded 47.5 mm, Lohegaon 45 mm, Magarpatta 40.5 mm, Lavale 38.5 mm, NDA 10.5 mm, and Koregaon Park 0.5 mm by 8:30 pm.
More Districts on High Alert
Pune and multiple other districts in Maharashtra remain on high alert, with the IMD predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and consistent downpours through the week.
The intense showers caused at least 34 trees to fall across different parts of Pune, though no injuries were reported. Incidents were reported in areas like Girija Vihar (Kothrud), Walvekarnagar (Satara Road), Phadke Haud Chowk, Narayan Peth, Baner, Koregaon Park, Hadapsar, and Gokhale Nagar.
After a brief break, rain resumed on Friday evening around 6 pm, again causing flooding and tree falls in Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, Samarthanagar (Vadgaon), B.T. Kawade Road, Ghorpade Peth, Market Yard, and Model Colony.
Prompt response by the fire brigade ensured that fallen trees and branches blocking roads were cleared quickly, helping restore traffic flow amid challenging conditions. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant as the city braces for more heavy showers in the coming days.
