Pune, 19th June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has completed the repair and strengthening of the Khadakwasla Bridge across the Mutha River, a key link between Khadakwasla and Shivane.
The project, carried out at a cost of around ₹2 crore, is expected to extend the bridge’s lifespan by another 10 to 15 years and ensure safer travel for commuters.
Built in 1965, the 160-metre-long bridge had shown signs of deterioration due to its age. A structural audit conducted by PMC found a decline in the strength of the bridge’s concrete, prompting authorities to undertake a comprehensive restoration project under expert supervision.
As the bridge is located below the Khadakwasla Dam, its pillars are regularly exposed to strong water currents. To address this, PMC strengthened the pillars through jacketing work and restored damaged concrete using advanced polymer mortar. Epoxy grouting was also carried out to improve the strength of the bridge’s slabs and support structures.
The project also included repairs to the abutments and wing walls, resurfacing of the bridge deck, installation of chain-link fencing, directional signboards, and a modern W-beam crash barrier on the Khadakwasla side to enhance road safety.
The work, which began four months ago, was completed before the monsoon season as planned. After final formalities are completed, the bridge will soon be opened to heavy vehicles.
PMC officials said the upgraded structure will provide safer and smoother connectivity for residents of Khadakwasla, Shivane, and nearby areas.
