Lonavala Records 1,290 mm Rain in 48 Hours; Pune Logs Fourth Wettest July Since 2014

Relentless monsoon showers triggered waterlogging across Pune, while torrential rain in the ghat regions pushed Lonavala's 48-hour rainfall to 1,290 mm, making July 2026 one of the city's wettest in over a decade.

Pune, July 7: Heavy rain continued to lash Pune city, its suburbs and the district's ghat regions until Tuesday morning, with the hill station of Lonavala recording an extraordinary 1,290 mm of rainfall in just 48 hours. Of this, 620 mm fell in the last 24 hours alone, highlighting the intensity of the ongoing monsoon spell.

Pune city has also witnessed relentless rainfall, with cumulative July rainfall reaching 309.1 mm in the first week of the month. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this makes July 2026 the fourth wettest July since 2014, behind 2024 (394 mm), 2022 (386.2 mm) and 2019 (369.1 mm).

Heavy Rain Across Pune

IMD data shows that Pune city and surrounding areas experienced heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, causing waterlogging on major roads and in low-lying areas.

By 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Chinchwad recorded the highest rainfall in the city at 268 mm, marking the second consecutive day it received more than 200 mm of rain.

Other major rainfall figures include:

  • Chinchwad – 268 mm

  • Dapodi – 125.5 mm

  • Pashan – 115.6 mm

  • Shivajinagar – 97.5 mm

  • NDA – 95.5 mm

    Officials said Pashan has likely recorded over 100 mm of rainfall on two consecutive days in July for the first time, making it a potentially historic event.

Fourth Wettest July Since 2014

The IMD said Pune has already received nearly 50% of its average monsoon rainfall this season. Weather data also points to a new trend, with Pune recording more than 300 mm of rainfall in July every alternate year since 2022.

Ghat Regions Witness Extremely Heavy Rain

The ghat sections of Pune district and nearby areas continued to receive intense rainfall for the second straight day.
