Pune, 5th June 2026: Three days late than normal schedule, the Southwest Monsoon officially entered Kerala on June 4, covering the entire state and advancing into parts of Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka. The onset marks the beginning of the country's rainy season.
Weather conditions are currently favourable for the monsoon's advance further. Over the next two to three days, it is expected to spread across more parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu before covering Goa and reaching the Maharashtra coast, likely through Sindhudurg district.
According to forecasts, the monsoon is expected to make steady progress across Maharashtra between June 4 and June 17. By around June 10, it could cover large parts of Konkan and the Western Ghats, while some areas of Marathwada may receive heavy rainfall by June 7.
Meanwhile, pre-monsoon weather activity is likely to remain active across the state. Mumbai, Konkan and several interior districts may witness rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds until June 8.
"Conditions remain favourable for the monsoon's progress towards Maharashtra, with widespread pre-monsoon showers expected in the coming days," said Manikrao Khule, retired meteorologist with IMD Pune.
Rainfall across Goa and Maharashtra is expected to remain above normal until June 17. Goa and Sindhudurg may receive widespread rain with isolated heavy showers, while heavy rainfall is also likely at some places in Ratnagiri district and the ghat regions of Kolhapur.
Meteorologists attribute the favourable weather pattern to a trough of low pressure extending from Marathwada across Konkan and Goa into the Arabian Sea. The system is helping both the monsoon's advance and enhanced rainfall activity over western Maharashtra and the Konkan region.
With weather systems becoming increasingly active along the west coast, rainfall is expected to intensify across Maharashtra over the coming days as the monsoon gradually advances into the state.
