Pune, 1st February 2026: Presenting the Union Budget 2026–27, Nirmala Sitharaman announced a major push to rail infrastructure, proposing seven high-speed train corridors across the country. Among these, two corridors are directly linked to Pune, one connecting Mumbai with Pune, and another connecting Pune with Hyderabad.
The proposed Mumbai–Pune high-speed rail corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Maharashtra’s financial capital and its key education and IT hub. Improved speed and connectivity are likely to support business travel, regional mobility, and overall economic activity across western Maharashtra.
Alongside the high-speed corridors, there is also plan for Maharashtra’s first semi high-speed rail project between Pune and Nashik. With a new Detailed Project Report (DPR) ready, the project aims to cut the current journey time of around five-and-a-half hours to just 120 minutes.
The semi high-speed Pune–Nashik service will strengthen intra-state connectivity and is expected to benefit commuters, industries, and tourism. Together, the high-speed and semi high-speed rail projects are set to give a major boost to Pune’s growth and reinforce its role as a key connectivity hub in the region.
