Organ donation gives life to many patients

Pune: In two different organ transplants performed at Ruby Hall Clinic in the past three days, vital organs like heart, lungs, eyes, kidneys, liver, pancreas and skin were donated, which gave a new lease of life to many patients.

One of the donors was a 30-year-old man who had suffered from intracranial bleeding due to hypertension. The heart of the donor was donated but his kidneys could not be retrieved as they had suffered damage.

Another donor was a 45-year-old man who was declared brain dead after an accident. 

Among the two patients, two hearts, lungs, two livers, two kidneys, one pancreas, four eyes and skin were donated. One heart transplant operation was carried out at Ruby Hall Clinic making it their third heart transplant this year while the other one was sent to Fortis Hospital in Mulund, Mumbai.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Surekha Joshi, Transplant Coordinator at Ruby Hall Clinic said that this was the 12th heart transplant at their hospital. “The organs were harvested from the patients which gave a new lease of life to many patients. The skin was donated to Sahyadri Skin Bank. One of the kidneys was donated to Aditya Birla Hospital. Both the donors were earning members of the family,” said Joshi.

She also noted that lungs were shared with a Chennai-based hospital.

Officials at the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre, Pune stated that the since January 1 this year, so far nine donors have donated their vital organs.
