Pune, 8th July 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has collected ₹1,411 crore in property tax from 7.75 lakh property owners by 7 pm on Sunday, the final day of its rebate scheme for residential property tax. The scheme, offering a 5% to 10% discount, aimed to encourage citizens to contribute to the city’s development. However, 3,376 fewer people paid taxes this year compared to the previous year, slightly impacting the expected revenue.
Typically, the PMC offers the tax rebate from April 1 to May 31, but this year, the deadline was shifted to May 1–June 30 due to delays in bill preparation for newly included villages and adjustments related to the 40% rebate scheme.
The final deadline was extended to July 7 after a server failure disrupted last-minute payments. According to Deputy Commissioner of Property Tax Avinash Sapkal, online payment was available until midnight, and the final collection might slightly exceed ₹1,411 crore.
Last year, by July 7, a total of ₹1,415.65 crore had been collected from 7.78 lakh taxpayers. Although the current figures are slightly lower, officials expect the gap to narrow by the end of the night.
PMC sources confirmed that 3,376 fewer citizens availed themselves of the rebate this year, resulting in a significant shortfall in the civic body’s expected income. The administration now plans to intensify efforts in areas like newly assessed properties, reinstating the 40% rebate, and recovering dues through special drives. However, the reasons behind the declining participation remain unclear and are expected to be investigated.
In the merged villages, where the state government has yet to finalize the property tax rates, the billing process remains uncertain. Still, around 1.74 lakh residents proactively paid ₹232 crore in taxes based on available online information. This move is driven by fear of future liabilities, should the government deny any concessions later.
