Pune, 4th December 2025: A flood of objections has hit Pune’s draft voter lists for the upcoming Municipal Corporation elections after widespread errors and mismatched entries came to light. A total of 22,809 objections have been registered, with an unusually high 9,863 submissions on the final day.
The civic body has around 35 lakh voters across 41 wards, based on the voter list updated for the Assembly elections as of July 1, 2025. After receiving this data, the Pune Municipal Corporation used a software tool called Data Split to create ward-wise lists.
However, the division process resulted in significant mix-ups, thousands of voters from one ward appearing in another, and in some cases, names even shifting between assembly constituencies.
These large-scale discrepancies have caused anxiety among aspiring candidates and attracted criticism from across party lines. Following this backlash, the Election Commission extended the objection deadline until December 3.
The highest number of complaints came from the Sinhgad Road regional office, which recorded 6,308 objections, while the Bhavani Peth office saw the lowest, with just 87.
Deputy Commissioner (Election) Prasad Katkar said that officials will verify each objection through field visits and take appropriate decisions. He clarified that there will be no hearings for these objections.
Although thousands of objections have been filed, the administration has been given time only until December 10 to verify all complaints, conduct on-ground checks, and complete corrections.
With barely seven days available, questions are being raised about whether the final voter list will be error-free when it is published on the stipulated date.
