Pune, 1st February 2026: To host the Pune Grand Tour, the Pune Municipal Corporation had removed around 200 speed breakers across major city roads. The move was aimed at ensuring smooth and uninterrupted movement for professional cyclists who ride at speeds of 60–70 kmph.
Now that the event has concluded, the civic administration has decided to reinstall speed breakers on nearly 75 kilometres of road to restore traffic safety.
Over the past four months, extensive road improvement works were carried out along the race route. A ₹145 crore tender was floated to resurface roads, re-carpet them, and level drainage chambers as per Indian Roads Congress norms. These upgrades provided temporary relief to motorists and ensured international-standard road conditions for the race.
The race passed through key city stretches including Bajirao Road, Tilak Road, Laxmi Road, Karve Road, Paud Road, Senapati Bapat Road, JM Road, Bhandarkar Road, Law College Road, and areas such as Baner, Balewadi, Aundh, and the old city peths. Speed breakers near hospitals, schools, government offices, and busy junctions were removed along these routes.
However, after the event, residents and commuters reported a noticeable rise in vehicle speeds at crowded and accident-prone locations. Following these concerns, the road department has prepared a plan to reinstall speed breakers at necessary spots.
The civic body has also been urged to ensure that new speed breakers strictly follow safety norms, with proper gradients, standard height, and clear white markings to prevent accidents, especially for two-wheeler riders.
Special speed breakers designed to help senior citizens and visually impaired pedestrians cross roads safely had also been removed during the event. These will now be rebuilt as part of the reinstallation process.
The Pune Grand Tour covered a 75-kilometre route across the city. As per the race guidelines, speed breakers on these roads were removed.
