PMC To Spends ₹1.8 Crore on Sinhgad Road Flyover Lighting Despite Planned Restructuring for Metro

Pune, 15 December 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved an expenditure of ₹1.8 crore for decorative lighting on the Singhad Road flyover, even though large portions of the structure are set to be demolished for the proposed metro project.

The flyover, located between Rajaram Bridge Chowk and Fun Time Theatre on Singhad Road, will be broken at as many as 66 locations to make way for metro pillars. The demolition work is expected to begin in the coming months as part of the Khadakwasla–Hadapsar metro corridor, which recently received approval from the central government.

Despite this, PMC’s electrical department floated tenders worth ₹1.79 crore for installing new lighting on the flyover. The proposal was approved during the Standing Committee meeting held on Friday. Notably, the civic body had already spent a significant amount earlier on lighting installations on the same flyover.

The flyover was constructed in phases to ease traffic congestion on Singhad Road. Two separate stretches were built, one near Rajaram Bridge Chowk and another between Vitthalwadi and Fun Time Theatre. While most sections are now open to traffic, congestion on the road continues.

As the metro line will pass directly along Singhad Road, metro pillars are already being constructed near the flyover ramps. However, additional pillars in the central portion will require breaking parts of the flyover structure, making the recent lighting expenditure a subject of concern.

The decision has sparked questions about coordination between civic departments and long-term infrastructure planning, particularly regarding the use of public funds on structures facing imminent modification or demolition.
