Pune, 28 June 2025: In a major step toward enhancing passenger safety and transport quality, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is set to install artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras in all its buses. Four cameras will be fitted in each of the 1,650 buses in its fleet, totaling around 6,600 cameras.

The project, estimated to cost around ₹4 crore, is expected to begin its tendering process next week. PMPML officials also said they expect approval from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for the same.

The decision to use AI cameras was taken recently after a successful trial run in selected buses. PMPML plans to install these cameras in both its own buses and those hired on contract. The main aim of the initiative is to reduce complaints from commuters, ensure better tracking of passengers, and keep a closer watch on driver behavior to avoid accidents and misconduct.

This move makes PMPML the first public transport body in the country to adopt AI technology on such a large scale in buses. Although the state transport corporation has also announced plans to implement AI in its upcoming smart buses, it is expected to take a few more months before it becomes operational.

Each bus will have four cameras, including one near the steering wheel to monitor the driver's facial expressions and physical condition while driving. These cameras will help identify whether the driver is sleepy, unwell, or agitated. If signs of fatigue or distraction are detected, an alarm system will alert the PMPML control room, allowing for immediate action.

Nitin Narvekar, Joint Managing Director of PMPML, confirmed that the installation process would begin soon after the tendering. He said the AI-based surveillance system would help track commuter footfall and ensure greater transparency and accountability within the city's public transport system.
