Pune, 9th September 2025: With metro ridership surging and passenger dissatisfaction on the rise, PMPML (Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd.) has officially requested permission from Pune Airport authorities to allow its metro feeder buses to enter the terminal area, a move that could significantly improve last-mile connectivity for travelers.
PMPML’s Chairman and Managing Director, Pankaj Deore, stated that a formal request will soon be made to airport authorities. “We plan to start discussions with senior airport officials soon, as feeder buses are only effective when they are easily visible and accessible,” he noted.
The airport-metro feeder service was overhauled in July due to low ridership and revenue. The route now includes Ramwadi Metro Station and extends to the Pune Railway Station, with seven buses making 108 trips daily. In August, this shuttle served 53,783 passengers.
Adding an innovative touch, PMPML intends to introduce London-style double-decker buses in September to connect major IT hubs like Hinjewadi, Kharadi, and Magarpatta. Manufactured by Chennai-based Switch Mobility, these buses are set for a month-long feasibility trial in Pune.
Alongside the increase in metro usage, PMPML reported a 20% decline in bus ridership during Ganeshotsav 2025 compared to 2022, due to commuters opting for the metro or private vehicles. Authorities also announced strict disciplinary measures, including suspensions, against bus drivers found using mobile phones or headphones. The success of feeder buses hinges on airport access.
PMPML has identified the lack of visibility and accessibility as a major barrier to ridership, urging airport authorities to allow entry into the airport premises. Service modernization is in progress. From route adjustments to the introduction of double-decker buses, PMPML is seeking ways to enhance last-mile connectivity.
