Pune, 29 November 2025: Security at Pune Airport has been tightened following an alert from national intelligence agencies. In response, administration have installed Artificial Intelligence–based cameras for the first time in the airport’s surrounding area.

These cameras will scan number plates of vehicles stopping illegally and automatically issue e-challans, with fines ranging from ₹500 to ₹1,500.

Till now, CISF and traffic police were manually acting against illegally parked vehicles, but the impact was temporary. Vehicles would move when officials arrived and return soon after, causing the same congestion again. The new AI system is expected to stop vehicles from waiting on the road and improve overall traffic flow around the airport.

The cameras have been placed on two busy stretches where vehicles frequently halt, New Terminal to Lohegaon Chowk and New Terminal to Symbiosis College Road. These roads have now been officially marked as No Parking, No Stopping zones.

If a vehicle remains stationary for more than three minutes, the AI system will capture the number plate and initiate a fine under the Traffic Violation Detection mechanism.

Traffic congestion has long been a problem for passengers arriving at or leaving the airport, especially at night when flight arrivals are high. Large numbers of cabs and rickshaws wait outside the terminal, often causing long queues and delays. Some passengers have even missed flights due to the jam.

Following repeated complaints, the Airport Authority and Aeromall management requested strict action against vehicles waiting on the roads. Traffic police have now taken up the task and begun installing AI cameras to continuously monitor the area.

According to Pune Traffic DCP Himmat Jadhav, from today, November 29, action will be taken against illegal parking and triple-seat riders in the airport vicinity using these new AI-enabled cameras.
