The contraband was discovered during the inspection of a shipment declared as mandarin orange snacks. The items were packed in white thermocol boxes, which raised suspicion during scanning due to irregularities. Upon closer examination, officials opened one of the boxes and found sealed tin containers inside.

Initially, the containers appeared to hold a white powder resembling salt. However, further inspection revealed vacuum-sealed transparent plastic packets hidden within the powder.

These packets contained hydroponic cannabis, a high-grade form of the drug cultivated using advanced techniques.

Following a detailed check of the entire consignment, officials confirmed the total seizure of 76.58 kg of cannabis. Acting swiftly, customs authorities launched an operation and arrested one accused in connection with the case. Further investigation is ongoing.

Officials also noted a recent rise in the smuggling of hydroponic cannabis from Thailand through Pune airport. Multiple such cases have been detected in recent months, raising concerns about organized drug networks.

Authorities believe a deeper investigation is needed to trace the distribution channels and identify the local links involved.

Hydroponic cannabis refers to marijuana grown without soil, using nutrient-rich water solutions in a controlled environment. This method enhances the potency and quality of the drug, making it more valuable in illegal markets.
