Pune Begins Alternate-Day Water Supply as Monsoon Delay Raises Water Concerns

PMC has started supplying water on an odd-even schedule from Monday to conserve reservoir stocks, while officials warn that prolonged delays in rainfall could lead to year-long water cuts

Pune, 16th June 2026: From yesterday the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started an alternate-day water supply system across the city to conserve water stored in the Khadakwasla dam chain.

The decision was taken following state government instructions to use available water reserves carefully as the monsoon has been delayed this year.

Under the alternate-day water supply arrangement, water is being distributed to different areas on an odd-even date basis. One set of localities received water on odd day (like 15, 17), while the remaining areas are scheduled to receive water on even day (like 16, 18). The new schedule is aimed at ensuring equitable distribution of water while preserving reservoir stocks.

The first day of implementation passed without major issues, and PMC received only a limited number of complaints from residents. However, civic officials expect more complaints and operational challenges in the coming days as people adjust to the revised water supply schedule.

PMC officials said technical preparations have been made to ensure smooth execution of the alternate-day water supply plan and to minimize disruptions. Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur said the civic administration has taken the necessary steps to ensure water is supplied according to the announced timetable.

Officials have warned that the city could face a prolonged period of alternate-day water supply if the monsoon remains delayed or rainfall is below normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the arrival of rain by June 20, but authorities fear that inadequate rainfall could force Pune to continue alternate-day water supply for up to a year.
