Pune, 28th August 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appointed Ernst & Young LLP as a consultant to conduct a detailed study of the city’s traffic problems. The consultant will work for three years using real-time traffic data and recommend measures to improve traffic movement.
The decision comes as the construction of flyovers and grade separators has failed to provide a lasting solution to Pune’s growing congestion. The PMC’s road department has proposed setting up a Pune Urban Mobility Cell to carry out a scientific and data-driven study of traffic conditions.
The consultant will collect and analyse information from multiple sources, including TomTom, telecom companies, CCTV cameras, the Pune Urban App and GPS-based public transport systems. Data from the road asset management system, GIS and road construction management systems will also be brought together.
Based on this information, an integrated traffic planning platform will be developed to help the civic body understand traffic conditions and plan future infrastructure more effectively.
The study will focus on:
Identifying the main causes of traffic congestion.
Mapping accident-prone areas.
Finding shortcomings in traffic signal systems.
Improving parking management.
Assessing the impact of potholes and unauthorised road digging on traffic.
Using real-time data to support future traffic planning and road improvements.
Ernst & Young LLP will be paid ₹2.37 crore annually, taking the total cost of the three-year project to around ₹7.11 crore. A separate office for the traffic study is also planned at Ghole Road.
The aim is to create a common platform where traffic-related information from different agencies can be analysed and used for decision-making.
While the PMC has now approved another consultant to study the city’s traffic problems, it is still unclear when the exercise will lead to visible improvements on the roads.
PMC Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale did not provide a clear timeline for when Pune residents can expect actual relief from traffic congestion after the study and recommendations are completed.
