Pune, 1st April 2026: In a major shift towards digital governance, the upcoming Census 2027 will introduce self-enumeration and mobile-based data collection, with the first phase set to begin in Pune from May 1, 2026.
Within the limits of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the house listing and housing census will be conducted from May 1 to June 14. During this period, residents can choose to submit their details online through a dedicated self-enumeration portal between May 1 and May 15.
Citizens are required to register on the portal, answer 34 questions, and submit their information. After submission, they will receive a unique Self Enumeration ID (SE ID) via SMS or email, which must be shown to enumerators during household visits scheduled from May 16 to June 14.
Alongside self-enumeration, officials will carry out door-to-door data collection using a mobile application, marking a complete transition to digital methods. Authorities have assured that all information collected will remain confidential.
Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, who is also the Principal Census Officer, and Additional Commissioner Omprakash Divte have urged residents to complete the process within the given timeline and cooperate with enumerators.
They said active participation is essential for accurate data, which directly supports better planning and development.
The second phase of the census will be conducted in February 2027.
India’s census, one of the largest statistical exercises in the world, dates back to 1872 and has been conducted every 10 years since 1981. The 2027 exercise will be the 16th census overall and the eighth since Independence.
