Pune is witnessing a noticeable rise in kidney-related ailments as soaring summer temperatures begin to take a toll on public health. Doctors across the city have reported an increase in cases of kidney stones and urinary tract infections (UTIs), with hospitals seeing nearly a 25 percent spike compared to previous months.
Medical experts say dehydration is the primary reason behind this surge. During the summer, excessive sweating leads to significant fluid loss. When this is not balanced with adequate water intake, urine becomes concentrated, creating ideal conditions for minerals and salts to crystallize and form kidney stones.
The same lack of hydration also contributes to a higher risk of urinary tract infections. Reduced urine output and poor hygiene during hot weather can encourage bacterial growth, making women and elderly individuals particularly vulnerable to infections.
Pune Doctors note that a considerable number of patients in the 25 to 55 age group are being diagnosed with kidney stones, while many others are seeking treatment for UTIs each month. They explain that concentrated urine not only accelerates stone formation but also increases the chances of infection.
Patients commonly report symptoms such as severe pain in the lower back or sides, a burning sensation while urinating, frequent urge to urinate, fever, and overall discomfort. Health experts warn that ignoring these symptoms can lead to complications if not treated in time.
Doctors are urging residents to take preventive measures, especially during peak summer. They recommend drinking sufficient water, maintaining proper hygiene, and avoiding prolonged dehydration to reduce the risk of kidney stones and urinary infections.
