Pune Civic Body Plans Mandatory App-Based Theatre Bookings After Bal Gandharva Scheduling Mix-Up

PMC's Standing Committee seeks fully online reservation system to improve transparency and prevent misuse of prime dates

Pune, 17th June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to make online reservations mandatory for its major theatres, including Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha and Annabhau Sathe Natyagruha, following concerns over booking irregularities and a recent scheduling controversy.

The issue surfaced after a theatre performance and a condolence meeting were allotted the same time slot at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir. The delay in the condolence program led to confusion and disruption for theatre-goers, prompting sharp criticism of the administration during a Standing Committee meeting.

Committee members also raised concerns about how prime dates, such as weekends and public holidays, are frequently reserved by a select few individuals. They alleged that some agents secure these high-demand slots and later resell them at higher rates, limiting access for genuine theatre groups and organisers.

To improve transparency and streamline the process, the Standing Committee directed the administration to shift theatre reservations to the Rangagayatra App. Officials have been asked to consult artists, theatre producers, theatre enthusiasts and public representatives before finalising the policy and making necessary improvements to the platform.

Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale said the civic body is committed to digitising the reservation process and eliminating discretionary allotments. “As the Pune Municipal Corporation is digitising all its services, theatre reservations should also be made fully online through the Rangayatra App. We will not bow to any pressure and remain committed to implementing a transparent online booking system,” he said.
