Pune, 14th August 2026: Potholes across the city have prompted Mayor Manjusha Nagpure to question the Pune Municipal Corporation’s road department over the quality and monitoring of road works.
Nagpure held a meeting with municipal officials, including Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, to review the condition of city roads.
She questioned why roads continue to deteriorate despite the PMC spending crores of rupees every year on repairs, resurfacing and pothole filling.
She also asked why damaged roads are not being repaired during the Defect Liability Period (DLP), when contractors are responsible for rectifying defects in their work.
During the review, the mayor noted that several roads repaired during 2025-26 have developed problems before their defect liability periods ended. In some locations, the top layer of asphalt has already come off.
The PMC has been directed to provide a detailed report within eight days covering:
The amount spent on each road
The length of roads repaired or resurfaced
The type of work carried out
Whether the completed works were geo-tagged
The status of defects reported during the liability period
Nagpure also directed the municipal commissioner to take action against officials and contractors if poor-quality work is found.
Nagpure also sought an account of the PMC’s 500-metric-tonne hotmix asphalt plant. She questioned the need for separate tenders for pothole repairs if the municipal plant is already producing asphalt in large quantities. The road department has been asked to provide details of how much asphalt was produced at the plant and where it was used.
According to Nagpure, citizens reported 5,931 potholes in 2025, while 3,230 complaints have been received so far in 2026.
She said the lower number of complaints does not mean officials can wait for citizens to report potholes. Road department officials should identify damaged roads themselves and take corrective action.
The mayor has ordered the PMC to fill all identified potholes across the city within the next eight days.
“Citizens should not have to wait for complaints to be registered. Officials should be able to identify potholes themselves. All potholes in the city have been ordered to be filled within eight days,” Nagpure said.
