Pune Sees Increase in Minimum Temperature After Coldest December in a Decade

After back-to-back cold waves in December and early January, minimum temperatures in Pune have returned to normal, with daytime heat now giving summer-like feels.

Pune, 17 January 2026: After experiencing back-to-back cold waves through December and the first week of January, Pune’s winter chill has eased, with temperatures returning to near-normal levels or even more than normal levels. This winter season marked the coldest December the city has seen in the last decade, according to weather records.

On Friday, minimum temperatures in suburban parts of the city such as Wadgaon Sheri, Magarpatta, Chinchwad, and Koregaon Park rose to around 18 degrees Celsius, nearly four degrees above the average.

However, some central and rural pockets including Shivajinagar, Malin, and Haveli continued to record relatively cooler conditions, with minimum temperatures ranging between 12 and 13 degrees Celsius.

Today, January 17, Shivajinagar reported a minimum temperature of 13.9 degrees Celsius, while the maximum climbed to 31.7 degrees Celsius. In several parts of Pune, daytime temperatures crossed the 32-degree mark, making residents feel as if summer has arrived early. Many Punekars reported noticeably warmer afternoons, especially during peak daytime hours.

Meteorological officials noted that while nights remain mildly cool in select areas, the overall trend points toward rising temperatures. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this temperature range is expected to persist over the coming week.
