Pune, 27th May 2026: The complete closure of Sarasbaug and the famous lake temple has been announced by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for two days, on May 28 and 29.
However, the decision has drawn strong opposition from Punekars, who have questioned the reasons behind shutting one of the city’s most visited public spaces.
Punekars argued that regular maintenance work at Sarasbaug is carried out daily and therefore closing the entire garden and temple is unnecessary. Many visitors also pointed out that security arrangements are already in place at the site, raising concerns over why a complete shutdown was required.
The issue became more controversial after officials gave different explanations regarding the closure. Initially, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure stated that the temple would remain closed for repair and maintenance work. Later, authorities clarified that the decision was taken following orders from the Deputy Commissioner of Police due to security concerns.
The conflicting statements have led to confusion among citizens, with several Punekars expressing dissatisfaction over the administration’s handling of the matter. Regular visitors and devotees said the sudden closure would inconvenience families and worshippers who frequently visit Sarasbaug.
Citizens have now demanded more clarity from the administration and questioned why the garden is being shut despite ongoing maintenance and existing security measures at the location.
