Pune, 27 November 2025: Pune Traffic Police have taken action against 110 vehicles on the very first day of enforcing a strict new 30 kmph speed limit on the Katraj bypass.

The speed restriction was introduced soon after the tragic accident near the Navale Bridge, where eight people lost their lives. The new rule applies from the Swaminarayan temple to the Navale Bridge.

To control speeding, police have installed new signboards from the Swaminarayan temple to the Vadgaon bridge and set up a speed gun near Bhumkar Chowk to record vehicle speeds and take immediate action. Emergency service vehicles such as ambulances, fire brigade and police vehicles are exempt.

Traffic police have also been running a major campaign against violations. Between October 15 and November 14, action was taken against 5,620 vehicles, collecting fines of ₹33.52 lakh. In a special drive, 863 vehicles were fined ₹17.63 lakh, according to traffic inspector Sunil Gawali.

Authorities have repaired broken dividers near lodges and commercial establishments that earlier allowed vehicles to enter the highway dangerously. Senior Police Inspector Sharad Zhine from Ambegaon police station said that the dividers have been fully repaired and all unauthorised entry points are now blocked.

The Katraj bypass is a key road for Pune, but speeding, heavy vehicles and poor road conditions have caused repeated accidents, especially near the Navale Bridge. With reduced speed limits, divider repairs, speed gun monitoring and continuous patrols, officials hope accident numbers will drop.

The coming days will show whether drivers follow the new rules and whether the measures improve safety on the route.
