Pune, 2nd October 2026: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is exploring alternative locations for some of its flight training facilities as increasing air traffic in Mumbai and Pune puts pressure on available airspace. The National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla and Kolhapur are among the locations being considered for shifting small aircraft training facilities, NCC Director General Lieutenant General Virendra Vats said.
Currently, the NCC conducts much of its flight training using infrastructure at various Indian Air Force (IAF) units across the country. However, the growth of civilian air traffic, particularly in Mumbai and Pune, has increased pressure on available airspace, making it challenging to accommodate training flights while maintaining safety.
The NCC is assessing the feasibility of relocating some of its aircraft training activities to areas with less congested airspace. The NDA in Khadakwasla is among the options being examined, considering its existing aviation facilities, infrastructure and proximity to NCC cadets and colleges in the Pune region. Kolhapur and other locations are also being considered.
Lieutenant General Vats said that shifting aircraft and training activities alone would not be sufficient. The NCC must also ensure coordination with local colleges, training centres and cadets in the proposed locations. The distance between airports and training centres, availability of cadets, airspace safety and supporting infrastructure will also play an important role in the decision.
The NCC is reviewing its flight training arrangements as part of a broader reassessment of aviation infrastructure in the country. The proposed changes aim to address the growing demand for airspace while ensuring that cadets continue to receive flight training without compromising safety.
The NCC will consider all operational requirements before finalising any relocation. The process is currently focused on identifying suitable locations that can support training activities and provide adequate facilities for cadets.
