Pune, 29th August 2026: A contempt petition has been filed against Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, alleging failure to implement directions issued by the Bombay High Court to control noise pollution in the city.
The petition has been filed by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Pune District CHS and Apartments Federation, Pune District Retail Traders Association, Shri Swami Samarth Cooperative Society and senior citizen Vilas Lele.
The petitioners have alleged that DJs, high-powered sound systems and lasers are being widely used during Ganeshotsav, religious festivals, political programs and processions.
They claim that noise levels at several locations have exceeded 100 decibels, raising concerns about the impact of excessive noise on public health.
Under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, the permissible noise limit in residential areas is 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. The petitioners allege that these limits are frequently breached in Pune.
According to the petition, excessive noise is affecting senior citizens, children, patients, workers and other residents. The petitioners have said they are not against festivals or traditional celebrations but want them to be conducted within the limits prescribed by law.
They have urged the authorities to strictly enforce noise pollution regulations and take action against violations while ensuring that traditional celebrations can continue without causing excessive disturbance to residents.
