Pune, 3rd July 2026: Heavy rainfall batter the city through the night and continued into Friday morning, bringing much-needed relief from rising temperatures and water crisis.
However, the showers also disrupted normal life, with reports of waterlogging, tree falls, flooded underpasses, traffic congestion and power outages emerging from several parts of the city.
One of the major incidents was reported from Mangalmurti Chowk in Rasta Peth around 3:30 am, where a large tree collapsed onto vehicles parked at a Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) depot. The incident damaged multiple vehicles, though no injuries were reported. Civic teams later reached the spot and began clearing the fallen tree.
The continuous rain also led to water accumulation at several low-lying locations and highway underpasses, slowing traffic across the city. Choked stormwater drains worsened flooding in many areas, leaving commuters stranded in long traffic jams during the morning rush hour.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shivajinagar recorded 25.3 mm of rainfall, while Pashan received 26.1 mm during the last 24 hours.
Adding to residents' difficulties, people in Dattawadi reported a power outage that lasted for more than three hours following the heavy rain. Frustrated citizens took to social media to complain about the prolonged disruption, saying the outage caused significant inconvenience.
As images of flooded roads and traffic snarls circulated online, many Punekars remarked that the city had once again completed its familiar 'monsoon checklist'—heavy rain, traffic jams, waterlogged roads and stranded commuters.
Several residents questioned when improved drainage infrastructure would finally become a reality, saying the recurring problems continue to surface with every spell of heavy rainfall.
