Pune, 3rd July 2026: Punekars are likely to face potholes, waterlogging and traffic congestion this monsoon as only around 40% of roads excavated for the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) CCTV surveillance project have been restored.
Taking serious note of the delay, the Standing Committee has warned that contractors failing to complete road restoration will face strict action.
The PMC is executing an ₹18-crore citywide CCTV project to strengthen urban surveillance by installing 2,250 cameras across Pune. Over the past few months, nearly 28 kilometres of roads and footpaths have been excavated to lay underground infrastructure for the project.
However, several stretches where work has already been completed remain unrepaired, increasing the risk of potholes, water accumulation and traffic disruptions during the ongoing rains.
The issue was raised during Thursday's Standing Committee meeting, where Chairman Shrinath Bhimale directed the civic administration to submit a comprehensive report detailing the roads excavated for the project, the status of restoration work, pending stretches, reasons for the delay and the timeline for completion. He also sought details of any action taken against contractors responsible for missing deadlines.
The committee further instructed officials to immediately repair all dangerous stretches, fill potholes, install barricades, reflectors, warning signs and proper lighting at excavation sites. It also ordered the administration to establish an effective mechanism to ensure that citizens' complaints related to the project are addressed within 24 hours.
"Contractors who fail to restore excavated roads without delay will face strict action. Public safety is our highest priority during the monsoon, and we have instructed the administration to immediately repair all hazardous potholes and ensure that adequate safety measures are in place across the city," said Shrinath Bhimale, Chairman of the PMC Standing Committee.
