As part of the ₹600-crore project, six new platforms will be constructed, with groundwork and foundation work already underway for Platforms 11 and 12. The entire redevelopment, including passenger facilities, is expected to take around three years.

The six new platforms are being built on the site of the old goods yard. Alongside the new construction, the railway administration will also extend the length of the existing platforms so that all of them can accommodate 24-coach trains. This will improve operational efficiency and allow longer trains to be handled with ease.

The expansion is expected to significantly ease congestion at Pune Railway Station, which has been witnessing a steady rise in passenger traffic. Once all 12 platforms are operational, the station will have the capacity to introduce around 60 additional trains from Pune.

It will also become easier to increase the number of coaches on existing trains, particularly those currently operating with 16 or 17 coaches.

Railway Public Relations Officer Hemant Kumar Behra said, "Work on Platforms 11 and 12 has started and is currently at the initial stage. Once all six new platforms are completed, Pune Railway Station's operational capacity will increase substantially."

At present, around 50 trains originate from Pune every day. After the project is completed, this number is expected to rise to 110. Nearly 75 trains will also be able to operate with additional coaches, increasing the total number of coaches by around 198.

The upgraded station is projected to handle about 290 train movements and nearly 3 lakh passengers daily, making it one of the busiest railway hubs in the region.
