PUNE, 18 October 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation's long-anticipated riverfront development project, extending from Sangamwadi Bridge to Bund Garden, has seen notable progress.

After nearly three years of waiting, the Revenue and Forest Departments have approved the transfer of 11,015 square meters (around 1.01 hectares) of government land to the PMC for the beautification and ecological restoration of the Mula-Mutha riverfront.

The project, aimed at transforming the riverbanks into an attractive, safe, and eco-friendly public space, had been facing delays due to land ownership issues. The land in question lies adjacent to Final Plots 81, 85, 86, and 90 in Sangamwadi.

Persistent follow-up by the civic body prompted Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule to instruct both departments to release the land for river improvement and ecological balance purposes.river

According to the government order, PMC will hold the land under the “Occupant Class II” category and must pay the assessed value as per prevailing rates. The approval includes several key conditions, the flood-line or flood-carrying capacity of the river must not be altered, and all necessary permissions from environmental and other statutory bodies must be obtained before starting any development work.

The civic body must also ensure that untreated sewage is not discharged into the river. Additionally, the land cannot be transferred or used for commercial purposes without prior permission from the Revenue and Forest Departments. The PMC has been directed to begin using the land for the approved purpose within three years.

This decision is expected to accelerate the completion of the Sangamwadi–Bund Garden riverfront section, which has been under development for years as part of Pune’s broader Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Project.
