Pune, 7th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has completed major works under the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project, but residents still face a basic problem, there is no proper road to reach parts of the riverfront.
To address this issue, the civic administration has proposed acquiring 38,542 square metres of private land between Sangamwadi and Bund Garden Bridge. The proposal has been placed before the Standing Committee.
The proposed land is important for developing planned facilities along the riverfront, including a green belt, gardens, jogging tracks, open gyms, food outlets and parking facilities.
The land is also required for the relocation of the affected crematorium at Sangamwadi and for developing the proposed Confluence Ghat near the Mula-Mutha river confluence.
However, the land acquisition process has faced difficulties as the owners have reportedly not cooperated with the administration for document verification and measurement of the property.
The administration has warned that delays in acquiring the land could create problems for the riverfront project. Without proper control over the area, dumping of construction debris and garbage could increase.
The PMC has also raised concerns about the possibility of unauthorised construction, marriage halls and hotels coming up in the area. Such development could increase pollution and obstruct the planned public facilities along the riverfront.
According to the 2025-26 Ready Reckoner rates, the 38,542 sq m private property is valued at approximately ₹17.30 crore.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has proposed initiating the land acquisition process under Section 126(2) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act (MRTP Act).
The PMC has therefore decided to pursue formal land acquisition instead of relying only on negotiations with the landowners. The administration expects the move to clear a major hurdle and accelerate the pending works of the Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development Project.
