Pune, 29 July 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sent a proposal to the state’s Urban Development Department seeking ₹300 crore under the Disaster Management Fund for a river improvement project along the Mutha River between Vadgaon Khurd and Rajaram Bridge.

The move comes in response to the severe flooding that occurred on July 24, 2024, after heavy rainfall led to a major water release from the Khadakwasla dam. Areas like Ekta Nagar, Vitthal Nagar, and Nimbaj Nagar near Sinhagad Road were hit hard, prompting citizens and local housing societies to demand long-term protection measures.

Back then, the then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal had inspected the flood-affected areas. The idea for a dedicated river improvement project in the region gained momentum after their visit.

The proposed stretch, referred to as “Stretch-6”, covers 4.1 km and includes plans for embankments on both riverbanks, tree plantations, beautification, a jogging track, and drainage improvements. PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has formally written to the state government, requesting the necessary funding for this project.

Meanwhile, ongoing riverfront improvement work in other parts of Pune is progressing. The stretch between Sangamwadi and Bund Garden (3 km) is nearly 90% complete, while 32% of the Bund Garden to Mundhwa Bridge section (5.3 km) has been completed. Survey work is also underway for the 8.8 km stretch between Wakad Bypass and Sangvi Bridge.

The PMC hopes that with timely funding, the proposed Vadgaon Khurd–Rajaram Bridge section will not only help prevent future flood damage but also contribute to a cleaner and greener urban riverfront.
