Pune: Sinhgad Road Metro Should Run on Main Road, Not on Riverbed; Say Residents

Citizens demand that the proposed Swargate–Khadakwasla metro line run along Sinhgad Road as riverbed alignment will reduce accessibility and fail to ease traffic congestion

Pune, 12 February 2026: Residents of Sinhgad Road have strongly demanded that the proposed Swargate–Khadakwasla metro corridor be constructed, as per plan, along the main Sinhgad Road instead of being shifted to the riverbed or canal road.

They argue that the metro is crucial to easing daily traffic congestion and should directly serve the densely populated areas on both sides of the main road.

Sinhgad Road has high population density, with most residential areas directly connected to the main arterial road. Citizens say that if the metro runs along Sinhgad Road, access will be easy and walkable for a large number of commuters.

However, if the corridor is shifted to the riverbed or canal road, residents from the opposite side of the road and interior localities will find it difficult to use the metro.

“The purpose of the metro is to reduce traffic congestion and encourage public transport. If the metro is taken through the riverbed, it will not benefit most residents living along Sinhgad Road,” said local resident Ranjit Shinde.

Residents also pointed out that lower metro usage would defeat larger goals such as fuel savings, pollution control, and traffic decongestion. They believe that a poorly accessible metro alignment would discourage daily commuters from switching from private vehicles to public transport.

The metro project, citizens stressed, is meant for the convenience of Sinhgad Road residents. With most habitation aligned along the main road and space already provided for metro pillars near the flyover, they insist that the corridor should remain on the main road. “Only if the metro runs on Sinhgad Road will it truly benefit local citizens,” Shinde added.

Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to shift the proposed metro corridor from Sinhgad Road to the riverbed or the canal road, instead of constructing it by drilling into the existing flyover

Citizens have also urged the civic administration to ensure proper traffic management during metro construction, regardless of the final alignment, to minimise disruption on Sinhgad Road.
