Pune, 26 July 2025: India delivered an impressive performance at the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) held in Paris, France, from July 18 to 24, clinching a total of five medals. The Indian team, consisting of five students, brought home three golds and two silvers. Among the gold medallists was Pune’s very own Kanishk Jain.
The event, organized this year in France, saw participation from 415 students across 87 countries. Representing India, Kanishk Jain from Pune, Snehil Jha from Jabalpur, and Riddhesh Bendale from Indore won gold medals, while Agam Shah from Surat and Rajit Gupta from Kota secured silver medals.
The Indian contingent was led by a team of academic mentors and scientists, including Prof. Sitikant Das from IIT Kharagpur, Vinayak Katdare, Dr. Amrita Sadhu, and Dr. Vivek Lohani.
In the medal standings, India shared the fifth position along with Taiwan, Japan, and Russia. The United States topped the tally with all five participants winning gold. South Korea, China, and Hong Kong followed with four golds and one silver each.
This marks India’s 26th participation in the Olympiad. According to the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, which oversees the national Olympiad programme, nearly 84% of Indian participants over the years have won either gold or silver medals, with no student in the last ten years returning without a top-tier medal.
The consistent performance, especially by students like Kanishk Jain from Pune, reflects the growing strength of India’s science education and Olympiad training.
