Pune Sees Temperature Dip After April Heat; IMD Predicts Cooler May Ahead

Pune Summer: Slight relief in early May as temperatures fall below average; chances of above-normal rainfall across India

Pune, 2nd May 2026: After enduring intense heat in the second half of April, Pune has finally recorded a marginal drop in temperatures at the start of May. This has brought slight relief to residents, although the weather continues to remain hot during peak afternoon hours.

On May 1, the Shivajinagar observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 36.7°C, which is 1.8°C below the normal summer average. The minimum temperature, however, stood at 23.1°C, slightly above the usual level, indicating that nights are still relatively warm.

Suburban areas of the city reported similar weather conditions. Regions like Lohegaon that had been witnessing extreme heat, with temperatures crossing 40°C for more than 15 consecutive days, saw a slight decline, with readings dropping to around 39.3°C.

Despite this, the heat remains noticeable, especially during the afternoon due to only a minor overall reduction.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), skies over Pune are expected to remain mostly clear in the coming days, with only a slight possibility of rainfall. The gradual dip in temperature is likely to continue, offering some respite from the recent heatwave conditions.

The IMD has further stated that large parts of Maharashtra, including Pune, are likely to experience below-normal daytime temperatures during May. At the same time, above-normal rainfall is expected across many regions of the country, which could help moderate temperatures further.

Data from IMD also indicates that April 2026 was comparatively cooler than recent years in Pune. The average daytime temperature for the month stood at 38.1°C, lower than 39.3°C in 2025 and 39.6°C in 2024, suggesting that despite brief heatwave spells, the overall monthly temperatures remained relatively moderate.
