Pune, 18 November 2025: The Pune traffic police have begun enforcing strict regulations for private luxury and travel buses to reduce growing congestion on major roads. The new rules, which came into effect on November 15, include fixed routes, designated halting points, and limits on entry during peak evening hours.
The department has said these measures are still under review and that objections and suggestions will be accepted for the next 15 days before a final notification is issued.
The decision follows a review meeting between traffic officials and private travel operators, where concerns were raised about buses stopping at random locations, blocking junctions, and using residential streets during rush hour.
Traffic officials said the city had no choice but to streamline the movement of these buses to restore smoother flow on important routes. They explained that unauthorised halts and unpredictable routes were causing unnecessary delays for thousands of commuters.
According to the department, all private buses leaving Pune must now use assigned routes and stops. They cannot enter internal residential roads or halt frequently at major city junctions. Similar rules apply to buses entering the city.
Vehicles coming from Mumbai via Alandi Road or Wagholi are allowed to stop only at Sangamwadi, Kharadi, or Wagheshwar Parking. Buses arriving from the Mumbai–Satara Road stretch will not be permitted to enter the city at all and must remain on the Pune–Bengaluru bypass.
To control evening congestion, the police have also prohibited luxury and private travel buses from entering Pune between 6 pm and 10 pm. Enforcement teams have been instructed to take action against buses that halt for more than three minutes at designated points or enter restricted stretches during peak hours.
Officials said the changes are expected to gradually ease pressure on major roads and improve traffic flow, especially during the evening rush. They added that once the new routes and restrictions are properly followed, Pune should see smoother movement along its busiest corridors.
New routes include revised flows through Swargate, Satara Road, Solapur Road, the Mumbai–Pune Highway, Nagar Road, Wagholi, Warje, and Sangamwadi. Entry routes from Mumbai, Solapur, and Alandi Road have also been streamlined with limited halting points.
The traffic department has urged citizens, organisations, and stakeholders to send their objections or suggestions as it works toward finalising the new regulations.
