Pune, 24th June 2026: Thousands of Punekars in western part, including Kothrud, Bavdhan, Erandwane, Prabhat Road, Bhandarkar Road and Shastrinagar, are grappling with an acute water shortage.
Due to Pune Municipal Corporation's alternate-day water supply schedule, many areas are receiving water at very low pressure, leaving several housing societies without adequate supply.
Residents say the reduced pressure is preventing water from reaching overhead tanks in many apartment complexes. As a result, families are facing difficulties in meeting basic daily needs such as cooking, bathing and accessing drinking water.
Citizens have expressed frustration over what they describe as poor planning and inadequate response from the civic administration.
The crisis has also led to a sharp rise in demand for water tankers. However, residents and elected representatives claim that obtaining tankers has become increasingly difficult, with many societies waiting for long periods despite urgent requirements. Allegations have also surfaced regarding a lack of transparency in tanker allocation.
The situation is particularly severe in areas such as Sant Dnyaneshwar Colony, Mutheshwar Colony, Gurujan Society, Kothrud Gaothan, Kailas Society, Paramhans Nagar, Shankar Nagari, Shravan Dhara, Prabhat Road, Bhandarkar Road, Law College Road and several parts of Bavdhan. In some locations, water tanks have run completely dry, forcing residents to purchase drinking water.
Haridas Javlekar, Secretary of Manik Apartment near Ashish Garden Chowk, said, "Our society's water tank has completely run dry, and residents are forced to buy drinking water. Better advance planning by the administration could have prevented this situation."
Advocate Vasanti Jadhav, Chairperson of the Kothrud-Bavdhan Ward Committee, said, "Instead of supplying water for four hours on alternate days, the administration should provide water daily for two hours with adequate pressure." She also emphasized the need for greater transparency and fairness in the distribution of water tankers.
