Pune: To tackle the rush of people visiting the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) for learners' licences, the RTO is set to add a new floor to the existing building. Senior officials of the RTO said an amount of Rs 75 lakh has been sanctioned for it.

“The constant flooding of the learning licence section during rains and water logging leads to issues with Internet connectivity, due to which applicants have to wait for a long time,” said an official. The spot behind the office where people wait in queues to get their learners' licences will be demolished and a floor added with more waiting space, better washrooms and a cafeteria, said the officials.

At present, a batch of 25 people can be catered to at one go. Additional fund of Rs 6.5 crore has been requested from the Transport Department for complete renovation of the RTO. 
BI Ajri, Pune Regional Transport Officer said, “The learning licence department is a small unit and applicants have to wait for a long time. It does not have adequate seating capacity. We plan to construct a new floor in the main building and road safety videos will be screened.”

Currently, 1,500 applicants for learners' licence come to RTO daily.
