PUNE, 25 October 2025: Police have detained Pune-based software engineer Prashant Bankar in connection with the alleged suicide of a 28-year-old woman doctor from Beed, who was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan, Satara district, on Thursday night.
The doctor, posted at a government hospital, had written a note on her palm before taking her life. In it, she accused sub-inspector Gopal Badane of raping her multiple times and alleged that Bankar mentally harassed her.
Following the discovery, the Phaltan city police registered a case against both men. While Bankar has been taken into custody, sub-inspector Badane has been suspended from service and remains on the run.
According to investigators, the doctor had been in a relationship with Bankar for about five months, which reportedly ended on bitter terms. Her professional interactions with Badane were related to her hospital duties, as she was often asked to conduct medical examinations of suspects brought in by the police.
The incident has stirred strong reactions in Satara and Pune, once again drawing attention to issues of sexual misconduct and harassment faced by women in public service.
