Pune, 12 July 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has completed the structural audit of 40 bridges out of the 90 total constructions within its jurisdiction. Of these, 38 structures have been identified as needing repairs, and work on them has already begun.
According to officials, 70% of the repair work has been completed so far. The city’s hoardings were also inspected during this process, and all 2,640 billboards approved by the Sky Sign Department were found to be in good condition.
This audit report was submitted to the district administration by the PMC following a directive issued after the tragic incident in Kundmala village, Maval Taluka. In the wake of that accident, the District Collector had ordered structural audits of all bridges, causeways, hoardings, and flyovers across the district.
Alongside PMC, departments such as the Public Works Department (PWD), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Zilla Parishad, Railways, Water Resources Department, State Road Development Corporation, and PMRDA submitted their respective reports. However, the PMC and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation were the last to submit their findings, which were received only two days ago.
The PMC’s report includes detailed inspections of river bridges, flyovers, railway overpasses, pedestrian subways, vehicular underpasses, pedestrian overbridges, and causeways. Out of the 90 structures under PMC’s purview, 61 were physically inspected. Among them, 38 constructions were found to be over 25 years old and required urgent structural repair. These bridges have since been taken up for maintenance.
Two structures, the Sadhu Vaswani Railway Overpass and a causeway near Vruddheshwar, were already identified as dangerous and had been demolished earlier. The PMC has prioritized the repair of 11 critical bridges, and this work is being undertaken by its Projects Department. The civic body has reported that 70% of the required repair work has already been completed on these structures.
Moving forward, PMC is planning to appoint expert consultants to conduct thorough structural audits of all such civic infrastructure. A tender process for appointing these experts has already begun, and ₹10 crore has been allocated for this purpose in the municipal budget.
