Pune, 7th July 2025: In a series of unfortunate road accidents across the city, three people, including a 17-year-old boy and a senior citizen, died, while two children sustained serious injuries. The incidents occurred in Lohgaon, Patil Estate, and near Magarpatta Road over the past two days, highlighting growing concerns over road safety and reckless driving in Pune.
On Friday night, a speeding tempo crashed into a two-wheeler near the Dhanori check post in Lohgaon. The bike was being driven by Raju Chavan, with his wife Rukmini (29) and their two young children riding pillion. The sudden impact caused all four to fall, and Rukmini sustained a critical head injury. She was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead during treatment.
The children are currently undergoing medical care. A case has been filed at the Vimantal Police Station against the tempo driver, identified as Mahadev Borkar, who fled the scene and is currently being traced.
In another incident on the same night, an elderly man, estimated to be around 65 years old, was killed while crossing the road near the Patil Estate bridge on the old Pune-Mumbai highway. The man was struck by a speeding car and died on the spot. Khadki police responded quickly, sending the body to Sassoon Hospital for post-mortem. A case has been registered against Nilesh Chandraprakash Sanghvi, a resident of Khadki.
The third fatal accident occurred on the morning of July 1, when Mangesh Pandurang Chamanar, a 17-year-old resident of Vadgaon Sheri, was hit by a speeding vehicle near Amanora Mall while riding his two-wheeler. Despite efforts by bystanders to rush him to the hospital, Mangesh was declared dead before treatment could begin. An FIR has been registered at the Hadapsar Police Station against an unidentified driver based on a complaint by a local resident.
These incidents, though unrelated, point to a pattern of negligence and rash driving that continues to plague Pune’s roads. With victims ranging from children to senior citizens, the city’s road safety measures are once again under scrutiny.
